Jungle Heart Mulu

Gin ie leh Mulu.
Mulu toh lei-yah kr-may.
Gin onion nohng-ung mu-ley le-yah la-tay.

"Welcome to Mulu. Mulu is our home.Welcome from the heart of our jungle home"

Imagine going back in time to the place where the world first began.Where the air is fresh and
crystal clear and the water is pure and clean.

Where the mountains are clad in lush tropical rainforest as far as you eye can see and mist hangs heavy in the morning over the gurgling mountain streams.

See the jungle giants of the forest, the meranti trees, streching tall against the sky, And hear the incessant clatter of gibbons telling such tale as you could not believe, And in that moment the barking deer and marble leopard roam wild and free.

And a old Penan man with blowpipe in hand silently treads a jungle path, And a fearless Tring/Berawan Head Hunter prepares to enact the Warrior Dance.

Imagine going back in time to a place where time itself could stand still. From Mulu's jungle heart

Born in Long Terawan Tutoh Baram in 1957, Willie Kajan was taught jungle survival, tracking, hunting and fishing on his father's traditional tribal land, part of which is now Gunung Mulu World Heritage Area.

After the gazetting of the Mulu National Park in 1974, a team of experts from Britain's Royal Geographic Society was sent to carry out an extensive investigation of the area's unique Flora and Fauna and to further explore Mulu's massive cave systems.

From 1977-78 Willie worked as a porter with a team of experts from the Royal Geographic Society, helping them begin to uncover some of Mulu's many mysteries.

In 1980 Willie started working as a part-time guide for tailor-made tours with Borneo Adventure Sdn Bhd and other travel agencies. Then in 1993, when he was able to buy his own longboat and outboard motor, he began working as freelance local tour guide, a job he still loves.
Willie is a fully licensed Tour Guide for the World Heritage Mulu National Park at National and State level and is registered member of the Sarawak
Tourism Guide Association.
His intimate knowledge of the Mulu, Baram and Bario areas, along with his own cultural heritage and jungle survival skills, make Willie a well qualified, knowledgeable and entertaining guide.

Over the years, Willie has led more than 50 tours to Mulu Summit, the Pinnacles and the Headhunter's Trail, some of the most arduous treks on offer in Mulu.
Together with several concerned members of the community, he has also worked hard too highlight enviromental, logging, land and human right issues in the Mulu area. These efforts have at times received international media coverage; however, there is still much to be done in this field. Willie continues to work for his community and is currently attempting to set up a Kindergarten for Tring/Berawan and Penan children, and to raise funds for the Mulu Research Group.
